We have some findings in the period before the Romans, but we do not know exactly how the city had been at that time. The excavations that have been carried out near the village of Campi have brought to light a fortified Roman village. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Riva del Garda came under the control of various populations, including the Goths, Lombards, Franks, Scaligeri, Visconti, Venetians. In the early 1500s, the Venetians built the Bastion, which was used to have the complete view of Lake Garda. Continuing along the old road that runs along Lake Garda, near the Trat pass, you can still see the remains of the castle built by the Rivans in the Middle Ages to control the passage, the battle took place between Veneziani and Visconti.
Noteworthy is the Church of the Inviolata, with a central plan, with the interior decorated in Baroque style and that the tradition wants designed by a Portuguese architect. Several buildings such as the power plant, the Sole hotel, the Olivi Beach complex, San Rocco square, the nursery school are the work of the rivan architect Giancarlo Maroni, known as the architect of the Vittoriale, home of Gabriele D ' Annunzio to Gardone. Particular is the gate of St. Joseph, once the church of St. Joseph and now reduced to road crossing. It is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city.
The main historical monuments are the Palazzo Pretorio (1375), which under the loggia hosts Roman, medieval and modern tombstones; la Rocca, fortress on the 12th century lake surrounded by a canal with a drawbridge; the doors in the medieval walls; the Apponale tower overlooking the port; the Bastion, a Venetian fortress built on the slopes of Mount Rocchetta at a height of about 160 m. On Mount Brione and in its vicinity are the Austro-Hungarian fortifications such as Fort Garda, Fort St. Nicholas, Fort St. Alexander and the Middle Battery. La Tagliata del Ponale instead is located on the homonymous road that connected Riva with Valle di Ledro, now transformed into a path.
La Rocca is home to the MAG Museum Alto Garda and hosts many cultural activities, especially during the summer. Lake Tenno (6 km to the north), Lake Ledro (5 km to the west) with its museum of Paletnology, the Ponale road and the Varone Waterfalls (3 km to the north) are also of great interest. geological point of view. From the hamlet of Pregasina (7 km towards Valle di Ledro) you can enjoy the view of Lake Garda.
